Common Issues
Swap Taking Longer Than Expected
Most delays are caused by blockchain confirmation times, not issues with Swaptain or THORChain. Cross-chain swaps involve transactions on at least two different blockchains.
Typical durations by chain:
| Chain | Inbound Confirmation | |-------|---------------------| | Bitcoin | 10-30 minutes (1-3 blocks) | | Ethereum | 1-5 minutes | | BNB Chain | 15-30 seconds | | Avalanche | 1-2 seconds | | Cosmos/THORChain | 6-10 seconds |
What to do:
- Check your transaction status in the bot — look at which stage it's in
- If the inbound is confirmed and the swap is "Executing", THORChain is processing — be patient
- For streaming swaps (Best Price mode), execution takes longer but gives a better rate
Insufficient Balance
Your wallet doesn't have enough of the source token to cover the swap amount plus gas fees.
Solutions:
- Reduce your swap amount to leave room for gas fees
- Deposit more of the source asset
- Make sure you have the native chain token for gas (e.g., ETH for Ethereum transactions, BNB for BNB Chain)
On EVM chains, you need the native token (ETH, BNB, AVAX, etc.) to pay gas fees — even if you're swapping an ERC-20/BEP-20 token. Make sure you have some native tokens in your wallet.
Insufficient Gas
Similar to insufficient balance, but specifically about gas. You have enough of the token you want to swap, but not enough of the chain's native token to pay the transaction fee.
Solution: Deposit a small amount of the native chain token (ETH, BNB, AVAX, etc.) to cover gas costs.
Price Drift / Slippage Error
The market moved beyond your slippage tolerance during the swap.
Solutions:
- Try again — the market may have stabilised
- Increase your slippage tolerance in Settings (but be aware of the tradeoff)
- For volatile tokens, consider using a higher slippage tolerance (5-10%)
- Use Fastest Execution mode to reduce the time window for price movement
No Route Available
Swaptain couldn't find a valid swap route between your source and destination tokens.
Possible reasons:
- One of the tokens may not have sufficient liquidity on THORChain
- The chain may be temporarily halted
- The token pair may not be supported
Solutions:
- Try routing through a major asset (e.g., swap to ETH first, then to your destination token)
- Check if the destination chain is experiencing issues
- Try again later — liquidity conditions change
Token Approval Failed (EVM Only)
The token contract approval transaction failed.
Solutions:
- Ensure you have enough native tokens (ETH, BNB, etc.) for the approval gas fee
- Try again — it may have been a temporary network issue
- Check that Auto Approve is enabled in Settings
Blocked Token Warning
Swaptain has detected that the token you're trying to trade has serious security risks.
What "Blocked" means:
- Honeypot — you can buy but cannot sell the token
- Fake token — impersonating a legitimate project
- Dangerous contract — has self-destruct or other dangerous capabilities
Blocked tokens cannot be traded on Swaptain. This protection is in place to prevent you from losing funds to scam tokens. If you believe a token is incorrectly blocked, reach out to our support team.
Stranded Assets
If a multi-leg swap fails partway through, you may have "stranded" assets — tokens sitting at an intermediate point in the route.
What to do:
- Swaptain will notify you if assets are stranded
- Follow the in-bot prompts to recover your tokens
- Stranded assets can typically be recovered by completing the remaining leg or reversing the swap
Bot Not Responding
If Swaptain isn't responding to commands:
- Check your internet connection
- Try sending
/menuto re-initialise the conversation - Close and reopen the Telegram chat with @SwaptainBot
- Check swaptain.bot for any announced outages
